Challenge Age and Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre announce partnership in delivering a new Community Service Course to encourage more volunteering on the island from January 2021. One of the most important positive developments in 2020 has been the power of helping others in our communities and reaching out to those who have been disadvantaged by Covid-19

Volunteering is good for you and for others. Some of the reasons people choose to volunteer are that it enables you to:

  • give something back to an organisation that has impacted on a person’s life, either directly or indirectly
  • make a difference to the lives of others
  • help the environment
  • help others less fortunate or without a voice
  • feel valued and part of a team
  • spend quality time away from work or a busy lifestyle
  • gain confidence and self-esteem.

The new Community Service course is one of Challenge Age’s bite-sized skills development courses for adults from January 2020. These are 20 hours in length and involve online meetings and practical experience coaching. On offer from January 2021 are the following introductory skills programmes:

  • Digital Skills– Developing your digital skills including online learning, online meetings and networking safely using social media
  • Community Service – An introduction to taking up community service and volunteering in partnership with Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre
  • Sports & Exercise – Undertaking a new sport and exercise including running, cycling, walking and swimming
  • New Skill or Hobby – Identifying a new area and how to go about developing your skills.

These short courses are part of a larger programme called Challenge Age but can be undertaken as stand-alone courses from January 2021. The programme is supported by Isle of Wight Council

“In these difficult times we need to take a positive approach and see this as a time when we can invest in ourselves. We have designed a personal development programme for adults 50+ that can be undertaken safely whatever COVID-19 control measures are introduced. Challenge Age has been designed to enable participants to gain the skills they need to fully participate in the new order but also to challenge themselves to realise greater personal fulfillment and confidence.”
